Preventing Hazardous Oil Discharge Through Using Spill Berms

By Erin Vargas

The spill berms are essential containment units for mining and oil industry. Spill containment units are used practically in keeping chemical substances and oil spills from entering into the drains that may eventually lead to the rise of several adverse environmental issues. Oil spillages in the history have never been reported less harmless. All of which cost several lives.

Perilous substances can severely take away several lives. Not only that these can adversely affect humans, the marine creatures can vanish in minutes as well if the spillage is never rescued immediately. Soil and water pollution are obvious aftermaths of such condition that can somehow lead to animal and human extinction.

People must never wait for their close call. In particular, the tankers are supposed to employ the best precautionary approaches for the good of everyone. They ought to be vigilant for possible leaks of dangerous liquids 24 hours a day.

The designs of a containment berm could vary depending on what a company needs. Some allow easy adjustments on the curves or angles of the surface. Whereas, the portable berm is smaller making it easier to transport at the chemical or cleanup sites.

Portable berm is usually made from polyethylene elastomer, and its package usually include relative emergency kits. Some manufacturers are actually giving manufacturer discounts for this, especially when used for tanks, trailers and drums.

As for the larger spills, the assembled berm could be more practical. The assembled berm is typically employed in similar ways as the portable, yet it is basically more functional given the fact that this is used in covering larger areas.

The widespread use of spill berms is a mandate of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in an effort to prevent discharges of poisonous oil. Oil filled and electric utility industries are the areas where secondary containment units like these are highly required.
