Ways Of Writing Lyrics Today

By Chris Borg

Music feeds the soul, some say. It is enjoyable to make the beat of a song, even without writing lyrics, and is often used by paint and sculpture artists to help create the mood they need in order to create beautiful pieces. Sounds made by ancient folks were used for enjoyment as well as communication.

Primates, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, are even known to get in on the action. Making repetitive sounds by thumping sticks and rocks against hollow trees could have been the first music. Apes may have been doing it purely for entertainment, but people discovered deeper meaning to the sounds they were creating.

Music lends itself well to telling stories from poems. It is often done the other way around as well, adding words to written music. Either way, your ability to convey your feelings with music, lyrics or not, is something that comes from the heart. Upbeat, soulful or romantic tunes fill the ears of those who really listen.

The words in songs do not necessarily have to rhyme, and you do not have to be proficient in writing music to create a song. A song writer can simply write poems and allow others more adept to add the music. This cooperative partnership often results in beautifully written songs, both musically and lyrically.

There are all sorts of artists who write their own music, but many of them have others write the stories for them. Inspiration comes in many different forms, but if you're not feeling inspired, a simple way to come up with ideas is to cut random words out of magazines, newspapers, and even old books. Cut out words, randomly lay them out in front of you, and you might be amazed at what you come up with.

Just one strange sentence is all it may take to get your creative juices flowing. Just a few words, may be all it takes for your own imagination to come up with an amazing tale of love, betrayal, or utter silliness. You don't have to worry about your words rhyming; they do not even have to make sense. What's important is to just start writing, and to keep writing.

The enjoyment of music does not come only from creating it by writing lyrics, but also from listening to it. Whether on radio, television, compact discs or videos, happiness can wash over you with a soothing, loving song. Other times, your own feelings of despair, loneliness and loss of a loved one can be reflected back to you through a song.
